| 1975 - 1984 Bibendum beats
inflation: The difficult years By the mid 1970s the post war prosperity that continued through the 1950s and '60s had come to an end. Two energy crises, massive overcapacity and the emergence of global markets led to drastic restructuring and the closure of the Belfast plant. The period was not without its high spots. Michelin did extremely well in Formula One racing, securing four of the top eight places in the 1983 British GP.
