Michelin Men take efficiency route in annual MPG Marathon

08/10/2009

Two teams from Michelin's Stoke-on-Trent HQ have been showcasing their eco-driving skills by taking part in the annual MPG Marathon.

Michelin Factory Manager Peter Marsh and Environmental Manager Ian Cowie and Michelin Purchasing Staff Charlie Watts and Mick Underhill took part in 360 mile MPG Marathon last week. Driving record-breaking Peugeot 308 HDi cars – the car used to set a world record of 126 miles per gallon  in the UK – and fitted with Michelin Energy Saver tyres, the latest generation of low  rolling resistance tyre, they finished in 9th and 11th place in the overall standings.

Both teams of Michelin men participated in the MPG Marathon over two days on September and 1 October, beginning each day from the Brandon Hall hotel in Coventry on set circuits which both culminated in returning to Brandon for the race finish.

Peter Marsh, Michelin Stoke's Factory Manager, said:  “The MPG Marathon is an excellent way to showcase the importance of how a few simple changes to driving style coupled with  the right technology can vastly improve the fuel efficiency performance of a vehicle. Both the  Peugeot 308s drove well, with Charlie and Mick doing very well to achieve a top ten finish. It was an excellent event and we were very pleased to have taken part in it.”

The MPG Marathon, organised by FleetWorld magazine and is in its ninth year, sets a number of fuel and performance efficiency challenges to drivers including improving upon the published “combined cycle” fuel consumption figures of their vehicles. There is also the prize for the best outright fuel consumption and the best percentage improvement which is aimed at showing that even the less fuel efficient vehicles if driven smartly can return an improved fuel performance.

The MPG Marathon is open to cars and light commercial vehicles and there are separate prizes for the different classes of vehicles. The Energy Saver is Michelin’s latest generation of green tyres, and promises to cut rolling resistance, improve fuel consumption and reduce the amount of CO2 emitted during driving.
