The MICHELIN Guide Switzerland 2010 attests to the high quality of gourmet cooking with one new 2 star restaurant and 8 new one star | 18/11/2009 |
In the MICHELIN Guide Switzerland 2010, the list of the country’s fine-dining establishments has been expanded with the addition of one new two-star restaurant – Anne-Sophie Pic in Lausanne – and eight new one-star restaurants. Comprised of 1,562 hotels and restaurants across all comfort and price categories, the 520-page Guide will go on sale on November 19, 2009 in Switzerland and from mid-December in France. In all, the MICHELIN Guide Switzerland 2010 includes 867 hotels and 695 restaurants. The selection made by the independent, anonymous MICHELIN inspectors attests to the high quality of gourmet cooking in Switzerland. With a total of 101 stars, Switzerland remains the country with the greatest number of MICHELIN stars per capita. The Guide’s two three-star restaurants confirmed their high ranking of the previous year, while Schauenstein, a two-star restaurant in Fürstenau (Canton of Graubünden), could be awarded a third star once it has demonstrated greater consistency over time and across the entire menu. The number of two-star resultants currently stands at 13. Auberge de Floris in Anières (Canton of Geneva) and Homann’s Restaurant in Samnaun (Canton of Graubünden) were included in the Rising Star category, meaning they may be in line for a second MICHELIN star. The number of one-star restaurants increased from 66 to 69, with eight awarded their first star by MICHELIN inspectors. Rasoi by Vineent in Geneva became the country’s first Indian restaurant to receive a star. Two restaurants were listed in the Rising Star category and could obtain their first MICHELIN star. Recommendations made by MICHELIN inspectors include not only fine-dining establishments but also hotels and restaurants for limited budgets. The selection ranges from small family-owned accommodations to large resorts with spa facilities and luxury hotels, and from simple inns to “starred” restaurants. This wide array of establishments makes the MICHELIN Guide the indispensable companion for business and leisure travelers alike. Thirteen restaurants have for the first time received the Bib Gourmand label. Awarded to restaurants serving three-course meals at an excellent value for money (60 CHF maximum), the label is especially appreciated in today’s difficult economic environment where value for money is more important than ever. The MICHELIN Guide Switzerland 2010 includes 72 restaurants displaying the Bib Gourmand pictogram, the Bib Hotel label (180 CHF maximum for 2 people, breakfast included), which also recognizes excellent value for money, was awarded to 43 hotels. According to the MICHELIN Guide Switzerland 2010, the leading cities for gourmet dining are Geneva, which has six one-star restaurants, including three new additions, and Zurich, with five one-star restaurants, of which two new additions. The global economic and financial crisis has not spared the hospitality sector. In first-half 2009, the number of hotel nights in Switzerland declined by 7.4%[1] compared with the prior-year period. However, with the UEFA Euro 2008 football tournament held in Switzerland, last year was one of the best ever for the Swiss hotel industry. In general, the gourmet-dining segment has not been as seriously affected as the hotel sector, with three-star restaurants reporting smaller declines. |
