The correct pressure is important both for safety and for a long tyre life. They must be checked when the tyre is cold (By cold we mean the ambient outside temperature where the tyre is to be used). Tyre pressures must be checked regularly, about once every two weeks. A drop in pressure can be caused by:
- the natural leakage of air through the walls of a tyre, - drops in ambient temperature, - small perforations that, in a tubeless tyre, may not lead to immediate deflation but rather deflation over time, (a slow leak!). This in turn can lead to irreversible damage due to the tyre running in an under inflated condition.
For caravans and trailers: what are the correct pressures ?

 |
For good handling of a car / trailer combination, Michelin advises : |
 |
- Radial car tyre pressure: In the absence of special towing recommendations from your vehicles' manufacturer, the rear tyres should be set to the "fully laden" pressures. Where "fully laden" and "standard" pressures are the same, increase the tyre pressures at the rear of the car by 4 to 7 psi (0.3 - 0.5 bar), cold, compared to the "standard" pressure. - Caravan or trailer tyre pressure: In the absence of advice from the caravan or trailer manufacturer, consult Michelin quoting the exact tyre dimensions, (including the Load index) and giving the actual axle load being carried by these tyres, (by weighing at a weighbridge for example).
