A Michelin man figure on the shoulder of a Michelin tyre shows the location of the tread wear indicators situated in each of the main grooves of the tread. |
These indicators are small raised areas at the bottom of the grooves of the tread pattern.
If the surface of the rubber is level with these raised areas, the tyre has reached the legal limit of 1.6 mm and must be replaced. Beyond this limit, you are breaking the law.
However, even if the remaining tread depth is greater than 1.6 mm, you should adapt your speed and driving style to the external conditions, particularly on wet roads.
For these reasons you may wish to replace your tyres before the legal limit, if you feel that the performance of your tyres is not suitable for your pattern of usage.

Michelin Cold Weather tyres have a ‘snowflake’ icon to identify the location of additional tread wear indicators. They are 4 mm high. To keep an optimal adherence on snow, both for braking and traction, it is recommended to replace your Cold Weather tyres when the remaining tread depth has reached 4mm.
