How to store winter tyres?

Storing your winter tyres correctly is important to avoid causing any damage to them. Here are a few tips of best practices for winter tyres storage.

How should I store them?

You should not keep your winter tyres outside and unused for more than a month on your vehicle as it might damage them, or negatively impact their performance. Instead, you can raise your car or simply remove the winter tyres. If you remove the winter tyres, note their position on your car. By doing so, next winter, you will be able to rotate their positions to even the wear. It is also advised to wash them with water, clean them and dry them carefully (to avoid corrosion) before storage.

Where should I store them?

Tyres should be stored in a cool place away from direct sunlight, sources of heat and ozone such as hot pipes and electric generators. Exposure to these elements during prolonged periods of time will exhaust the tyre's oxidation and weathering agents within the rubber compounds and result in cracking. Garages, basements and garden sheds are ideal for this purpose and you can also buy special bags to protect them. Be sure that the surfaces on which the tyres are stored are clean and free from grease, fuel or other substances that could deteriorate the rubber. If you are a city dweller living in a smaller spaceor you don’t want to store them yourself, you can rent a storage solution from a garage, often nicknamed “tyre hotels”.

What is the best storage solution?

If you need a short-term storage solution, you can stack the tyres as long as the pile doesn’t go higher than 4 ft (1.2 m). If possible, try to avoid storing them directly on the floor by putting them on a pallet. If you are looking for a long-term solution, you should store them vertically on a rack. The rack should be 4 inch (10 cm) from the ground.

One last tip for the trip

Are you winter tyres fitted on rims? In this case, you are better off hanging them up or putting them on a single row.
