Why should I change my tyres from October to April?
This period corresponds to a seasonal temperature drop in the UK. Therefore, it is a good indicator of when to change from summer to winter tyres. When the average exterior temperature drops consistently below +7°C, summer tyres become less performant. It is time to use winter certified tyres. These tyres have rubber compounds which remain soft under low temperatures and a highly grooved sculpture providing optimal performance on cold roads.
Are winter tyres compulsory?
In the UK, winter tyres are not a legal requirement. But, if you live in a remote area that is prone to severe weather conditions, it is highly recommended to have winter tyres fitted. Nevertheless, it is compulsory to have them in many other European countries during several winter months (Austria, Estonia, Finland, Iceland,…). So, make sure to check the laws and regulations before crossing borders!
One last tip for the trip
Once your winter tyres are fitted, you should check the air pressure of each tyre each month. If you are setting the pressure in a warm environment, add 0.2 bar (3 psi) to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressures in order to correct the variances caused by negative temperatures.SEE MORE ADVICES
