Independent tyre testers : what are the quality requirements to be identified as the best tyres?

AUTOBILD TOP MANUFACTURER ALL SEASON 2023

Winter tyres, summer tyres and all-season tyres are tested on several criteria by independent organizations and magazines such as ADAC, AUTO BILD and AUTO MOTOR SPORT, but many more tests are carried out each year.

The criteria vary according to the testers and the chosen tyre type.

Depending on the type of tyre, a scale is defined to weight the different themes (snow, dry, wet, etc.) and performance according to common usage of this tyre type and consumer expectations.

To have the most objective and independent results, these organizations carry out all these tests with tyres purchased on the market, with professional pilots, in stable weather conditions, with the same vehicle, the same methodology, on the same track, the same day. All this to limit as much as possible the external influences on the results.

The test conditions are monitored and standardized.

Reference tyres are tested and retested before and after each series to ensure the stability of the results under these conditions.

The main tyre testers' criteria

  • On dry road : braking, handling, lap time and lane change
  • On wet road : braking, handling, lap time and lateral grip, straight aquaplaning, curve aquaplaning
  • On snow : braking, handling, lap time, acceleration
  • On ice : braking, handling, lap time, acceleration
  • Offroad: lap time or traction on gravel, sand, mud or grass

Other important criteria are assessed, such as :

  • Rolling resistance
  • Fuel consumption
  • Internal noise
  • External noise
  • Comfort
  • Longevity
