It’s the Swedish hypercar manufacturer that achieved the Nardo top speed record in 2005. And they’ve continued to break records ever since.
Naturally, they need to be able to trust their tyres. To achieve the performance they need, Koenigsegg has been working in close partnership with Michelin since 2002.
“The essential criteria for our hypercars is extreme performance,” says Christian von Koenigsegg, founder and CEO of Koenigsegg Automotive.
For Christian von Koenigsegg, the collaboration with Michelin works on a number of levels. But the bottom line is, they need to be able to rely on the tyres at high speed, and to know that they’re consistent over time.
During the painstaking development process, the Koenigsegg team gives input on what they believe the road tyres need to offer. To get there, they work hand-in-hand with the Michelin team to reach their goals of perfection for every hand-built Koenigsegg car.
The partnership is a two-way street. While Koenigsegg pushes every aspect of their car’s development, Michelin engineers are inspired to push development on the tyre side to the maximum. It is a mutually beneficial process.
One very exciting moment for Koenigsegg and Michelin was when the iconic Koenigsegg CCR scoo
ped up the Nardo top speed record in 2005.
Says Christian von Koenigsegg: “We broke an eight-year old Guinness World Record held by McLaren. That really solidified our collaboration and our trust of how the car works together with the tyres.” In a classic understatement he comments, “it was a really good match.”
In 2011, the Koenigsegg-Michelin alliance did it again, achieving a new world speed record for acceleration-deceleration with the Agera R.. They went from 0-300-0 km/h in 21.19 seconds. A breathtaking performance and a new Guinness World Record.
High performance knowhow for all
Working with cuttingedge carmakers is one way Michelin constantly improves tyre technology – not just for hypercars like the Agera, but for your car. In fact, you can benefit from the very same know-how when you choose MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tyres, rated up to an incredible 420 km/h.
