PR5 GT

Brian - July 15, 2020

I replaced my PR4 GT’s with the PR5 GT’s. I had over 10k miles on the 4’s in all types of conditions less snow and loved them. My initial impression of the 5’s is that they are more of a sport tire compound. They handle very well in corners providing maximum confidence and grip even when riding over tar snakes. The wet grip is on par with the 4’s. I have just over 3k miles on the 5’s now with a mixture of Highway and spirited mountain riding. All solo riding with the exception of one dinner with the wife locally. I posted a video I took today showing tread depth at various places around the rear tire. I was surprised to see some 4/32 readings in the center while showing around 7/32 on the sipes nearer the sidewall. The rear tire is wearing very fast in the center it seems. The bike is a 2011 Kawasaki Concours 14 that is traction control and ABS equipped so the wear is not from spinning or sliding the rear tire. The pressure has been kept at 42psi never getting below 40psi If these tires continue wearing at this rate they will be done well before 10k miles. Sad to say if that happens I won’t be purchasing another set of the 5’s

Road 5GT - Michelins New Top Dog

Phil - July 1, 2020

As an avid and hard riding sport touring motorcyclist, I'm now on my fifth high performance sport touring bike. Because I go through tires in the mountains curves, I bought a tire changers to reducer my total costs. I started to track the performance of every tire in a spread sheet and use raw data to help determine what works, and what doesn't. The number that I look at is cost per mile. I found early on, that I could find decent tires that cost less, but when I calculating cost per mile, these less expensive tires actually cost me more per mile. That was an enlightening moment. I don't just track cost though in this spreadsheet. Just as important is how well do they handle fairly aggressive riding on curvy roads in the mountains, how they grip and how much to the inspire a riders confidence in the rain. Right away, I could feel that these tires grip better than the Pilot Road 4GT. In the rain, I would say that they are better than the PR4s. I belong to a huge Concours 14 group where the Michelin PR4 GT was the top dog for years. I see a steady shift of riders moving to the Road 5 GT. This definitely looks to be the new top dog from Michelin. Well done guys.
