The 4 GT was the last Sport Touring Tire for Michelin

Joe Bob - September 1, 2020

I ride a Concourse 14 and often ride at the heavy end of the load range. I expect a tire to last 10,000 miles with decent cornering, braking, and wet weather performance. So far my favorite are the Power RS but they only gave me 1800 miles and 2500 miles - but that was expected. on Pilot Powers I got 3000 - excellent, fun, and again millage expected. On the 4 GT and 5 GT i got 8000 but I pulled the 5 GT's due to wet weather traction and corning stability. I know the tires are suppose to be better but you can't prove it by me. They scared me one too many times in the corners and hydroplaning on wet roads and were replaced. I have concluded the tire manufactures are too interested in making sport bike tires and not sport touring bike tires. I have also concluded Kevlar belts can't handle the loads without over pressuring to avoid scalloped tires - steel belts have no problems.

PR5 GT

Brian - July 15, 2020

I replaced my PR4 GT’s with the PR5 GT’s. I had over 10k miles on the 4’s in all types of conditions less snow and loved them. My initial impression of the 5’s is that they are more of a sport tire compound. They handle very well in corners providing maximum confidence and grip even when riding over tar snakes. The wet grip is on par with the 4’s. I have just over 3k miles on the 5’s now with a mixture of Highway and spirited mountain riding. All solo riding with the exception of one dinner with the wife locally. I posted a video I took today showing tread depth at various places around the rear tire. I was surprised to see some 4/32 readings in the center while showing around 7/32 on the sipes nearer the sidewall. The rear tire is wearing very fast in the center it seems. The bike is a 2011 Kawasaki Concours 14 that is traction control and ABS equipped so the wear is not from spinning or sliding the rear tire. The pressure has been kept at 42psi never getting below 40psi If these tires continue wearing at this rate they will be done well before 10k miles. Sad to say if that happens I won’t be purchasing another set of the 5’s
