HOW TYRES ARE CONNECTED TO THEIR ECOSYSTEM THANKS TO RFID

RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is a technology that uses radio frequency to memorise, store and record data on a device and to retrieve it remotely.

Integrated into the tyres at the design stage, this technology guarantees reliable identification: a unique identifier that cannot be falsified and can be read whatever the state of the tyre, right up to its recycling.

What are the benefits of RFID?

RFID technology improves traceability, efficiency and safety throughout the tyre lifecycle including recycling. It is now recognised as the market standard.

RFID also allows better warranty and claims management, optimised tyre monitoring, particularly during summer/winter tyre rotation. Vehicle monitoring and predictive maintenance are therefore enhanced.

Already present on truck tyres and in motorsport, the ambition is now to integrate RFID technology on all MICHELIN light vehicle tyres by 2024.

How does RFID technology work?

Serenity and safety

In the future, this technology will allow you to keep better track of your tyres thanks to key information: brand, model, size, identification number... So you can continue to drive safely.

Improved tyre monitoring and maintenance

Thanks to the information provided by RFID technology, your car dealer will be able to improve the maintenance of your tyres and better manage their change (from winter to summer tyres for example)

More guarantees

And if you need to make a warranty claim, you can easily and quickly identify your tyre and arrange for its replacement.

Protection

The RFID data is locked after the data is encrypted during the tyre manufacturing process.
The traceability technology is robust to combat theft and counterfeiting but also damage, ageing and weather conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What information is encoded in a tyre's RFID tag?

A tyre tag RFIDcontains the tyre's unique identifier. This is the original unique identifier of the tyre, based on the SGTIN-96 format, which includes the company prefix number, item code and unique manufacturing serial number. The RFID tags inserted in MICHELIN tyres comply with the international standards ISO 20909 and ISO 20910.

What information is accessible thanks to the RFID inserted in MICHELIN tyres?

An RFID scanner that reads the RFID tag embedded in the tyre automatically accesses the tyre's commercial designation (size, brand, range). This is the basic standard service provided by the tyre industry. Any other information related to the RFID of the tyre is subject to the prior permission of the tyre user.

What is the role of RFID in MICHELIN tyres?

The RFID in MICHELIN tyres allows identification needs to be met throughout the tyre's lifecycle. This means that services can be developed to improve productivity, the environmental impact of transport, the consumer experience, including driver safety, and the recycling of tyres at the end of their life.

Is my personal data associated with the information contained in the RFID tag?

The unique identifier associated with the RFID tag in a tyre can't give access to personal data without the consent of the person concerned. This data is comparable to a tyre-specific serial number.

Who can read the information contained in the RFID of my tyres?

Anyone who has a scanner, the associated API and is authorised by the consumer to collect information about them.

Can the RFID in MICHELIN tyres be deactivated?

Once inserted into the tyre, the tyre identifier can't be changed and the tag can't be deactivated without damaging the tyre. It is therefore impossible to deactivate the RFID.

How do I know that my vehicle's MICHELIN tyres contain RFID?

In order for us to be able to answer this question, we need a certain amount of information that can be found directly on the tyre your car is equipped with. We invite you to contact us using the contact form below to find out more.
