Sustainable Mobility

INTRODUCTION

Today, there are nearly 800 million vehicles on the road worldwide, a figure that could double by 2030. This is raising a wide range of increasingly pressing demands and issues – in such areas as health and safety, energy and raw material conservation, environmental protection and quality of life – that are crying out for solutions. In a more open world, people want to be able to get around not only more and more but also better and better. At the same time, rising populations are driving a steady increase in freight transport.

OUR CHALLENGES

The World business Council for sustainable development brings together nearly 200 global companies that share a commitment to sustainable development. As a member since 2001, Michelin took part in the organization's Sustainable Mobility Project (SPM), which proposes 7 goals:

• Goal one: Reduce conventional emissions from transport so that they do not constitute a significant public health concern anywhere in the world
• Goal two: Reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from transport to sustainable levels
• Goal three: Reduce significantly the number of transport-related deaths and injuries worldwide
• Goal Four: Reduce transport-related noise
• Goal Five: Mitigate traffic congestion
• Goal Six: Narrow mobility divides that exist within all countries and between the richest and poorest countries
• Goal Seven: Improve mobility opportunities for the general populations in developed and developing societies
