Explore MICHELIN Primacy 5 energy: Europe's First MICHELIN AAA-Rated Tyres

We are proud to introduce our latest innovation: the MICHELIN Primacy 5 energyTM, now rated AAA (1) under the European tyre labelling system. This triple-A rating signifies best-rated performance in three critical areas: rolling resistance, wet grip, and external noise. For drivers across Europe, this means lower fuel consumption, safer journeys, and a quieter ride, all without compromising longevity or comfort.

Understanding Europe (EU) Tyre Labelling

A mandatory classification system

The EU tyre label is a mandatory classification system (Regulation EU 2020/740) that helps consumers compare tyres based on three key performance indicators:

  • Rolling Resistance (Fuel/Energy Efficiency): lower rolling resistance requires less energy to move the vehicle, reducing fuel/energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.

  • Wet Grip (Wet braking): A higher wet grip rating ensures shorter braking distances on wet roads, enhancing safety.

  • External Noise (Environmental Impact): Quieter tyres reduce noise pollution, improving urban and residential driving comfort.

A tyre rated AAA achieves the highest grade in all three categories, an exceptional feat that reflects Michelin’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

What is Rolling Resistance?

Rolling resistance is the physical phenomenon associated with energy loss during the cyclic deformation of the tyre in contact with the road surface. This deformation causes energy dissipation as heat within the tyre’s materials (rubber, carcass, plies). The higher this resistance, the greater the force required to maintain motion, resulting in additional energy consumption.

For internal combustion vehicles, this extra consumption accounts for an average of 20% of fuel use (approximately one out of five full tanks). For electric vehicles, it directly impacts battery range, reducing the distance traveled per charge. Controlling this parameter is therefore essential to optimize energy efficiency and reduce CO₂ emissions.

Understanding the Benefits of AAA-Rated Tyres

Whether you drive a petrol, hybrid, or electric vehicle, MICHELIN AAA tyres(1) are designed to offer tangible benefits:

  • Stay Safe in Wet Conditions: The MICHELIN Primacy 5 energyTM tyre features large grooves and advanced sipes for improved water evacuation, delivering up to 8% shorter braking distances compared to its predecessor. (2)

  • Go Further: Independent tests show that MICHELIN’s AAA tyres lead the premium segment in longevity, meaning fewer replacements and less environmental impact. MICHELIN MaxTouch technology maximises contact with the road and evenly distributes the forces of acceleration, braking and cornering, delivering longer tread life without sacrificing performance. The new MICHELIN Energy Passive 2.0 compound offers excellent resistance to abrasion, so you can trust your tyres for longer. (3)

  • Save Energy and Money: Thanks to optimised casing design and slim belt technology, these tyres reduce rolling resistance, helping you refuel or recharge less often.

  • Drive in Comfort: thanks to an optimized tread pattern designed with special attention to acoustic performance, Michelin PRIMACY 5 energyTM achieves the best labelling A in exterior noise. This label A reveals a tread pattern optimised with MICHELIN Piano Acoustic technology plus MICHELIN Silent Rib GEN3, reducing noise generated not only at new but also all along wear life, thus making your journeys quieter and more refined. Did you know?

£148: is the reduction in fuel costs on average for a vehicle fitted with A-rated tyres compared with one equipped with E-rated tyres.(5)

9 m: is the reduction in braking distance on average for a vehicle travelling at 80 km/h and equipped with A-rated tyres compared with one fitted with D-rated tyres (6)

An A-rated tyre is HALF NOISIER than a B-rated tyre (7).

How to Identify and Choose the right AAA-Rated Tyres

Look for the EU tyre label on the sticker. A tyre rated AAA will show:

• A for rolling resistance

• A for wet grip

• A for external noise

FAQs About AAA-Rated Tyres

The AAA rating represents the highest possible performance in all three EU tyre label categories: fuel efficiency, wet grip, and external noise.

Most tyres achieve a mix of ratings (for example A–B–C), but our AAA-rated line earns an A in every area. This means your tyre offers the best balance of safety, economy, and driving comfort available on the European market.

Our tyres are tested under independent European laboratory conditions, following the official EU tyre labelling regulation (Regulation (EU) 2020/740).

Each result is also uploaded to the EPREL database, where you can verify the label yourself by scanning the QR code on the tyre sticker.

In addition, we conduct real-world road testing and simulation, measuring braking distances, rolling resistance, and acoustic performance to ensure consistent results beyond the lab.

While durability is not part of the EU label, our AAA tyres are designed for long lasting performance. We use advanced silica compounds and reinforced tread structures that resist wear and maintain performance throughout the tyre’s lifespan.

Field testing shows our AAA models retain wet-grip performance even after extended mileage, giving you more value per kilometre.

MICHELIN AAA tyres sit in the premium segment because of their advanced materials and manufacturing precision. However, when you consider fuel savings, longer tread life, and enhanced safety, the total cost of ownership is often lower over time.

At launch, our AAA range covers the most popular passenger cars and SUV sizes in Europe.

You can check size availability through our online tyre selector tool or ask your local dealer.

MICHELIN Primacy 5 energy TM is a summer tyre and delivers outstanding performance in rainy conditions.

For drivers facing snow or ice, we recommend our 3PMSF-certified winter tyres.

Always choose a tyre that matches your climate and driving style.

Look for 2 things:

  1. The EU tyre label showing “A / A / A” for efficiency, grip, and noise.

  2. The QR code on the label links to the EPREL database entry for that exact model.

Most drivers report a quieter, smoother, and more stable ride. You may also notice a sharper braking response in wet conditions and slightly improved fuel economy.

The difference is subtle but significant, especially on long journeys or in heavy rain.

According to the latest Three-A tyres review insights, many motorists who switch to AAA-rated tyres report significant improvements in performance and Fuel efficiency. Additionally, AAA-rated tyres deliver exceptional wet grip, ensuring superior safety and confidence during heavy rain and on challenging road surfaces. Read MICHELIN Primacy 5 energy TM tyre reviews
