Independent tyre testers: what are the quality requirements for being identified as the best tyre?
Winter tyres, summer tyres, and all-season tyres are evaluated on various criteria by independent organisations and magazines such as ADAC, AUTO BILD, and AUTO MOTOR SPORT. Many other tests are carried out each year.
The criteria vary depending on the test performed and the type of tyre chosen.
A scale is defined according to the type of tyre to evaluate its performance in different situations (snowy, wet, dry, etc.) under normal use of this type of tyre and according to consumer expectations.
To obtain results that are as objective and independent as possible, all tests are carried out by professional drivers, with tyres purchased from retailers, in stable weather conditions, on the same day and on the same track, with the same vehicle and following the same methodology. These precautions minimise the influence of external factors on the results.
Test conditions are controlled and standardised.
Reference tyres are tested twice, before and after each series of tests, to obtain reliable results under the given conditions.
Key criteria for tyre testers
On dry ground: braking, road holding, lap times, and lane changes.
On wet ground: braking, road holding, lap times, lateral grip, aquaplaning in curves and on straights.
On snow: braking, road holding, lap times, acceleration.
On ice: braking, road holding, lap times, acceleration.
Off-road: lap times or traction on gravel, sand, mud, or grass
Other important criteria are also evaluated, such as:
