Why BMW recommends the “*” marked tyres?
They are designed to meet all specific vehicle requirements.

Only tyres with the marking “*” (star) can give you the certainty that you are buying a tyre that has been specifically designed and tested for your BMW model. Michelin designs and engineers its tyres with BMW consumers in mind.

What makes the difference between a BMW M star (*) marked and non marked tyre?
Michelin is making major modifications to achieve the BMW M specifications: additional 2.5 years of develoment, 8 testloops with 30 versions tested on 5 different locations.
As an example, to design exactly the tyre that meets the expectations of the BMW M3/M4, the tyre geometry of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4S* has been modified: different layer tension, belt design, shoulder rigidity, groove depths and locations. But the biggest difference between the star (*) marked and non marked tyre are the compounds.
