A step towards the moon for Michelin
Michelin, as part of the Moon RACER(1) team led by Intuitive Machines, is participating in NASA’s call for projects under its ARTEMIS program for the development of a lunar rover (or Lunar Terrain Vehicle).
Michelin has developed the revolutionary Michelin Airless Lunar Wheel (MiLAW), designed to operate in an extraordinary environment.
This is not the first time Michelin has collaborated with NASA teams. For 30 years (from 1981 to 2011), we were the exclusive supplier of tyres for the main landing gear and the front auxiliary landing gear of NASA Space Shuttles.
More than a wheel
Michelin has proposed a lunar wheel capable of operating at temperatures ranging from -240°C to +100°C, designed to resist exposure to solar and galactic radiation, and preserving LTV battery autonomy.
Inspired by our excellence in mining, construction and agricultural tyres, Michelin designed a wheel that ensures durability and maximum traction on soft and aggressive terrain. It is also puncture-proof and is designed to operate for up to 10 years of mobility on the Moon’s particularly loose and rugged surface.
This highly demanding research project brings critical innovations to the world by achieving major advances in diverse types of materials, processes and digital simulation. These innovations are already feeding into all the Group’s research and development projects, supporting our innovation leadership and enriching Michelin’s offerings.
